End of School
School has finally come to an end, and summer is just around the corner. The weather is nice, flowers are in bloom, and the stress of mounting school work has been lifted from our shoulders. It has been a long year, but now that the end is here, it seems like it all went by so fast.

Boys State Qualifiers
Last Friday, seniors Malcolm Taylor and Isaac Chambers qualified for this week's IHSA Class 1A boys track state meet in the 400-meter dash, while sophomore Albert Anastasio made the cut in the 3,200 run. Taylor, the defending state runner-up in the 400, today won his heat in the 1A prelims and will go for the state title 2:55 p.m. Saturday at O'Brien Field in Charleston. Anastasio will also compete on Saturday; his race is scheduled for 10 a.m. Good luck, guys!

Senior Supper
Instead of having their "last meal" in Uni Gym Wednesday night, the nearly 60 seniors enjoyed fine dining at Champaign's Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano. Thanks for sending us out in style, Uni!

Big Show
The final result was definitely worth the wait. Directors Hannah Leskosky and Adam Tiouririne presided over a comedy production that was genius, pure genius. Don't know what we're talking about? Check out these video skits on YouTube.

Sonia Sotomayor
President Barack Obama has nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court. Assuming she wins Senate approval, she will be the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice in American history. This just continues to show the progress the U.S. has made in the past 50 years.

Awards Ceremony
Typically a dreaded experience due to its extended length, this year's year-end ceremony was nice and speedy. In addition to getting dismissed almost half an hour early, we were able to see tables worth of awards handed out to our peers. Congratulations, everyone!

Same Schedule
With the proposed schedule change hanging over our heads for the last few weeks, it was good to finally see a conclusion reached. Although a shorter day would be nice, we think Director Steve Epperson — who is retiring after two excellent years of leading Uni — made the right decision in not changing the schedule at this time. A lot more thought and consideration should go into planning a new schedule, and Epperson's successor, Jeffrey Walkington, should take the lead in that. Let's leave it open as a possibility for the upcoming years.

Dr. Steve Epperson
Speaking of our outgoing director, we would be remiss if we didn't dedicate our final cheer to him. The former Uni math teacher and longtime public school administrator came out of a brief retirement in the summer of 2007 to take over Uni High under difficult circumstances. We look forward to beginning a new era under his successor, Jeffrey Walkington, but we will remember that we owe much to Epperson's leadership of the past two years.

Finals
Who likes them? Three days of finals meant way too much studying and cramming, only for the information to immediately drop out of our brains the minute we stepped out of the classroom. There goes 20 percent of our grades!

Cleaning Out Lockers
It is always so sad to clean out our lockers at the end of the year. They have been like our mini-homes, epitomizing our own personalities. We don't want to have to take down all the beautiful posters our friends made for us, and we would like to keep all the magnets and pictures hanging forever. Plus, it is just a pain in the butt to drag all our heavy books home.

Erosion of Freedoms
As we are seniors who have been here for five years, it has come to our attention that the amount of freedom given to us has only decreased since we were subfreshmen. Prox cards, anyone? There used to be podiums in the middle of the floor at school dances, but now we aren't even allowed to grind at our own prom? We have seen more reprimanding e-mails and neon signs posted throughout the school this year than in any year we can remember.

Winter Surprise Party
So back in December there was a series of bad snowstorms, which ultimately resulted in our annual winter "surprise" party's cancellation. The administration assured us that the party would come at some other time, and the student body was satisfied. Now it is late May. It has been five months. So, what's the deal?

The school year is over! Graduation is Saturday! Enough with the complaints, already. Enjoy the summer!!
