URBANA — Freshman Jamie Blue and senior Rachel Skoza both have long lists of accomplishments. On Thursday, both added even more to their list.

The 5-foot-9 Blue was named to The News-Gazette's all-area second team, the only freshman to earn a place on the first or second team, or a special mention.

The 6-1 Skoza was named a News-Gazette all-area special mention.

Blue and Skoza were also named to the East Central Illinois Conference's first team. It was Skoza’s third year in a row that she made first-team all-conference.

Seniors Joy Shapley, 6-1, and Jessi Sullivan, 5-9, were each named News-Gazette all-area honorable mention, and both were also named ECIC honorable mention.

For Skoza, the awards cap an illustrious career in the blue and orange. The senior scored 1,126 career points, finishing fourth on the girls scoring list behind Sophia Neely (Class of '86), Amanda Smeltzer ('97), and Lis Pollock ('99).

Skoza, the team MVP, ranked 10th in the News-Gazette area in scoring (15.4 ppg) and 15th in rebounding (8.9 per game).

Yet for all Skoza’s accomplishments, Blue may have had an even more remarkable season. Named the Small School Newcomer of the Year last month by Illinois Basketball Services, Blue finished sixth in the area in scoring, leading Uni with 16.3 points per game.

Blue also led the team in total rebounds (221, for an average of 8.8), steals (3.3 per game), and assists (4.0). Her averages in assists and steals both ranked 11th in the area. Skoza and Blue placed 17th and 18th in the area, respectively, in rebounds.

The girls varsity finished 16-9 overall, finishing in a tie for second in the ECIC with a 9-3 conference mark. The 16-9 mark was coach Rebecca Murphy’s best record in her 15-year stint as Illineks coach.
