URBANA — Led by high scorer Jamie Blue, the host Illineks took care of business over the weekend, handily defeating conference opponents Buckley Christ Lutheran and DeLand-Weldon at Kenney Gym.
The 5-foot-9 freshman recorded a double-double against BCL in Uni's 67-38 win Friday, scoring 23 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, both game highs. She narrowly missed her fourth triple-double of the season, dishing out nine assists.
Senior Rachel Skoza added 15 points and eight boards against the Crusaders; senior Jessi Sullivan had 11 points.
The next day, Blue had 22 points to lead all scorers as the Illineks dispatched the D-W Eagles 60-24.
She and Skoza each had a game-high eight rebounds. Sullivan added 15 points.
Skoza, a career 1,000-point scorer, had a modest day offensively, netting three points, but they came on a rare trey by the 6-1 post player.
The victories raised Uni's record in the East Central Illinois Conference to 7-3. With two league games remaining, Uni is tied for second with Judah Christian behind undefeated ECIC leader Decatur Lutheran.
The wins also raised the team's overall record to 14-8, matching the most wins in a season for head coach Rebecca Murphy.
Her previous best record came in 2004-05, when the Illineks went 14-9 and shared the ECIC title with Decatur Lutheran (both teams were 9-1).
The Illineks have two chances this week to set the record for "Merf," now in her 15th season: tonight during Senior Night when they face Decatur Christian at Kenney Gym, and Thursday on the road against Normal Calvary Baptist.
The Calvary game will end the regular season; the IHSA Class 2A playoffs begin next week.
Uni, seeded third in the five-team St. Joseph-Ogden regional, will face host SJ-O at 8 p.m. Feb. 10; the Spartans are seeded second.
The winner of that game will play for the regional title on Feb. 12, also at SJ-O. The No. 1 seed is St. Thomas More.
Tonight's contest with Decatur Christian will be the Illineks' final home game of the season. The team will honor its six seniors before the game: Skoza, Sullivan, Sheri Grill, Deborah Ladd, Joy Shapley, and Lizzy Warner.
The JV will play St. Thomas More's freshmen at 6 p.m., with the Senior Night ceremonies to begin about 7 p.m. The varsity game is scheduled to begin at 7:15.
