O'FALLON — Despite the absence of several key swimmers, the Killer Whales pulled in second at the O'Fallon Invitational on Saturday, ahead of Marion High School.
Host O'Fallon dominated the meet with 295 points. Uni beat out third-place Marion by almost 100 points, 184-89.
Due to sickness and previous engagements, the Killer Whales competed with just 11 swimmers, which allowed Uni to participate in only two relays.
The team's top relay squad — featuring freshman Milee Nelson and juniors Erika Belmont, Lisa Boyce, and Sian Best — was missing three members, with only Nelson present.
Nelson, however, dominated the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle (2:10.93) and second place in the 500 freestyle (5:37.31). The winner in the 500, O'Fallon's Megan Luhrsen, swam less than a second faster (5:36.91) than Nelson.
The Uni freshman teamed up with sophomore Victoria Wong, junior Liz Allen, and senior Deborah Ladd in the 200 freestyle relay to place third with a time of 1:56.36.
In the 400 freestyle relay, Nelson and Ladd combined with junior Maritza Mestre and freshman Amalia Dolan for another third-place performance, finishing in 4:27.89.
Mestre also had a significant meet, coming in second in the 100 free (1:05.42) and fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:14.53).
The Killer Whales swim next at the Normal U-High Invitational on Nov. 8, their last meet before IHSA sectionals at Centennial on Nov. 15.
