The new black

When I see pictures of Jennifer Aniston, I think of the television show “Friends.” Sometimes, I think of her (undoubtedly) numerous hours spent on perfecting hair, makeup, and outfits, which allow her to maintain the title of “One of the Most Beautiful Women Alive.” I never ever think of her three-minute showers.
It seems, these days, that every celebrity does something to save the planet. Or at least, to give themselves a good face for the press.
Jennifer Aniston takes three-minute showers. Madonna adopts children so that she can give them a better life. (I’m not sure if constantly getting mobbed by the paparazzi can fit into this category.) Tyra Banks does whatever it is she does to contribute to the green movement.
Everybody seems to be doing their utmost to keep the planet from randomly bursting into flames from global warming.
By walking to work, taking shorter showers, and using less energy, you can become the hero of your own comic book.
I’m not advocating not caring for the planet that you live on, but I am advocating not doing something just because everyone else is.
Right now it seems like green is the new black, and while I am pleased that this is the case, I’ve always been wary of caving into peer pressure.
My point? Don’t ride in a hybrid car just because Paris Hilton does. (“I’m getting a car from Ford, a hybrid one. They gave me one. So, I think driving hybrid cars is the new way to go, and recycling.” — Deep, huh?)
Do it because it makes a difference.

Taking 3 minute showers or
Taking 3 minute showers or driving a hybrid car, no matter what the reason, is still helping. I know its wrong to do those things because of celebrities and media. And people shouldn't be like that. But isn't it better for them to do things because of peer pressure or wanting to be cool than to not contribute at all?
The problem is
The problem is that 'peer pressure and wanting to be cool' could just as easily make you to negative things as well. It's a moot point whether you feel that the end result is desirable, because the very fact that these forces are so absurdly powerful in our society should make us think about how dangerous it is.
