Welcome, Guest!

Gargoyle guide to the week in entertainment, Nov. 10-16

Two years after the phenomenally successful "Casino Royale," Daniel Craig returns as Agent 007 in "Quantum of Solace," sure to be the biggest box-office draw this weekend. For gamers, "Mirror's Edge" promises plenty of action, as does "Call of Duty: World at War." On the music scene, T-Pain drops "Thr33 Ringz," and Taylor Swift comes out with "Fearless." Check below for more highlights of the week in entertainment.

MOVIES OPENING IN C-U THIS WEEK

"Quantum of Solace"
Rated PG-13, dir. Marc Forster

James Bond (Daniel Craig) is back. The story picks up just days after the last 007 flick, the well-received "Casino Royale." This time as the agent travels across the world, he’s seeking revenge after the death of his love interest. According to the IMDb summary: "The mission puts him on a collision course with Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a ruthless businessman who, Bond soon learns, is brokering a deal to take total control of one of the world's most precious resources. Relying on allies new and old — including Camille (Olga Kurylenko), a beautiful woman with her own agenda — Agent 007 looks to bring down Greene and his conspirators." Two years ago, the release of "Casino Royale" was hailed as a huge step forward in reviving the Bond franchise, with Craig earning high praise for his portrayal of 007. Fans are wondering if "Quantum of Solace" can build on that success.

Laura’s Pick: Not a whole lot to choose from this week ….

New CD releases in stores this week

"Thr33 Ringz"
T-Pain

Threes are everywhere for T-Pain starting with his third album, "Thr33 Ringz." If you couldn't tell by the title, the concept of the album is T-Pain being the ringleader of his own circus. With all good circuses come many different performers and guests, and this album is full of them, including T.I., Ludacris, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Akon, and Chris Brown.

"Fearless"
Taylor Swift

The diva of country music is back with her sophomore album, "Fearless," and that perfectly describes her persona. This starlet is not just beautiful but also extremely talented; she wrote nearly every song on the album. In a day and age where you have girls like Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson, it's refreshing to see a young girl transcend those standards and put out music that sells just as well, or even better. With this album already starting off with a bang with her first single, "Love Story," it's exciting to see what she will bring out.

"David Archuleta"
David Archuleta

David is back from "American Idol" with his self-titled debut album. So what that he was runner-up on American Idol; so was Chris Daughtry, and look what's happened to him. This little heartthrob is sure to end up big in the charts, but will his music be any good? Well, if you were taking your opinion from his first single, "Crush," then the sky’s the limit for this teenager from Miami.

"Block Party"
Missy Elliott

Missy’s back with her seventh album, "Block Party." Missy may have been overlooked when she released two hot singles on the "Step Up 2" album that were shadowed by Flo Rida’s monster hit, "Low." Those who didn’t hear Missy's single "Ching-A-Ling" are really missing something.

"Soul"
Seal

The British crooner is back with his seventh studio album, "Soul," a cover album with 12 classic soul songs by legends like Otis Redding, James Brown, and Al Green. Also he gives a little recognition to Nov. 4 — Election Day — with his single, "Change Is Gonna Come." With his mesmerizing voice and the powerful words of soul legends, this album will not disappoint fans of Seal.

Will's Pick: For me it's a toss-up between T-Pain and Taylor Swift this week. One is really fun and will keep you dancing all night long while the other will just enchant you with her sweet voice and playful chords.

NEW DVD RELEASES IN STORES THIS WEEK

"Mister Foe"
Rated R, dir. David Mackenzie

This Scottish drama (also titled "Hallam Foe") is about a disturbed boy trying to expose the cause of his mother's death. While trying to do his mother justice, he falls in love — madly in love. This movie will take you all over Edinburgh, the streets, the rooftops, everywhere. The film's soundtrack also features music from bands such as Franz Ferdinand, Orange Juice, and Sons and Daughters.

"Hellboy II: The Golden Army"
Rated PG-13, dir. Guillermo del Toro

This sci-fi film stars Selma Blair. The film is about a truce between humans and the invisible fantastic realm. An evil leader sends nasty little creatures to attack the humans on Earth, causing all hell to break loose. Now the Earth’s superheroes must fight the villainous creatures to save our existence!

"Star Wars: The Clone Wars"
Rated PG, dir. Dave Filoni

Our traditional "Star Wars" has now become animated. As the Clone Wars disrupt the galaxy, the Jedi Knights fight to restore peace. Anakin Skywalker and Ashoka Tano are finally sent on a mission and come face to face with crime lord Jabba the Hutt. Count Dooku will stop at nothing to see that Anakin fails at his assigned mission.

Eleni’s Pick: I would watch "Mister Foe." The plot seems OK, but when I took a look at the trailer, the movie seemed far more impressive. Regardless of whether or not you watch the DVD, you should check out the soundtrack.

NEW VIDEO GAME RELEASES IN STORES THIS WEEK

"Mirror’s Edge"
Electronic Arts

Faith is a "runner" who has incredible momentum and speed. With the help of her abilities, Faith must save her sister from a totalitarian government. "Mirror's Edge" costs $59.99 for the Xbox 360 and PS3, and $49.99 for the PC.

"Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts"
Microsoft Game Studios

Banjo and Kazooie once again have conflicts with Gruntilda. This time, they fight over who is the owner of Spiral Mountain. This game is different from the previous "Banjo-Kazooie" games, as it features customizable vehicles that players construct themselves. "Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts" costs $59.99 for the Xbox 360.

"Call of Duty: World at War"
Activision

Set once again back in the WWII era, this game will introduce new features such as being more open-ended and allowing split-screen co-op. "Call of Duty: World at War" costs $59.99 for the Xbox360, PS3, $49.99 for the Wii, PC, and $39.99 for the PS2.

Gordon’s Pick: "Mirror's Edge." This game has very good graphics, and the game play is unique. Much of the game play is focused on movement to create a realistic first-person action-adventure game. On the other hand, gamers who like WWII-type shooters should get "Call of Duty: World at War," while those who enjoy platformers should get "Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts."

7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12
Courtyard Café

Free Arabic culture night, including a live band, henna, traditional dancing, and more.

Red Herring Coffeehouse Revival
8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Nov. 15
The Red Herring Vegetarian Restaurant
Tickets: $3, all ages

Local artists New Ruins, Common Loon, and Carl Hauck play at the Red Herring along with Montana indie folk group My Dear Alan Andrews

Laura’s Pick: The Red Herring show. Although I'm generally too condescending to take local indie bands seriously, it should be a nice way to spend the evening. Plus, Carl Hauck is surprisingly good, despite the fact that he's an acoustic singer/songwriter. If you have time, check it out!
