The Inscribed List
I just checked out a book from the Library & Information Science Library that could only be written by a true library geek: The Inscribed List, Or Why Librarians Are Crazy: Hilarious Real Names of Real People from Library Catalogs (2008), by Eric v.d. Luft. I must say though, that unless you are a 13-year-old boy (and I do know a few of those), you might not find it totally "hilarious." It's pretty full of names related to body parts, bodily excretions, and sexual innuendo.
There are also plenty of good plays on words, a la:
Machine Shop Mathematics (1951) by Aaron Axelrod
Friar Bacon (flourished 1828)
And general silliness:
Blasius Fimpel (fl. 1603)
Luigi Lasagna (1850-1895)
My favorites among the book titles fall into two categories, the "How to" category and, more narrowly, the "doing something for fun and profit" category.
To wit:
How to Cook Husbands (1899)
How to Tell if Your Boyfriend is the Antichrist (2007)
How to Raise a Jewish Dog (2007)
...and...
Telling Lies for Fun and Profit (1981)
Outfox the Kids for Fun and Profit (2007)
Gunrunning for Fun and Profit (1986)
Or, you can have it both ways:
How to Rule the World for Fun and Profit (2004)
The author's closing words:
"It is my fervent hope that everyone who has a funny name will write a book!"
