Now HERE'S a Computer Literacy 2 project idea

We're in that season now, with groups starting to design their semester projects. Maybe someone should check out the work of this self-described "retro-futurist":

What do you suppose he'd do with an iPhone?

Anyway, these objects make me think of Neal Stephenson's books, particularly Diamond Age, which is set in twenty-first century Shanghai but features a crazy neo-Victorian culture.

Neal Stephenson was my first thought too, although William Gibson was right up there. Very nice - I want one.

Huh... interesting. The problem is what happens if he has to get the electronics repaired? I imagine it's slightly harder to open up after the remodeling...

In fact, I would imagine that working on these machines after their rebirth would be much easier - the difficulty with working on mass-produced articles tends to come from the manufacturers' plan to make it impossible (in many cases) for the average user to have access to the works, necessitating expensive repairs and, especially, predictable and frequent replacements. I prefer the old way, when you could easily figure out how something was put together and fix it yourself. (And it had an aesthetic, too).
