URBANA — The girls volleyball team won its 12th match of the year tonight, defeating Decatur Christian in two games: 25-19, 25-21.
The conference win raises Uni's record to 12-9 overall, 6-2 in the East Central Illinois Conference. The Illineks are only three wins away from tying last year's school record of 15 victories. They could break that record Saturday at the Crusader Invitational in Buckley.
Tonight's victories at Kenney Gym weren't easy. In the first game, the Illineks fell behind by 8 points twice: 4-12 and 7-15.
With senior libero Jamie Weiser serving, the girls climbed back to within 2 points, 14-16. By the time junior outside hitter Annie Machesky took over, the hosts were behind by only a single point, 17-18. As Machesky served, the Illineks built a 22-18 lead, with the 22nd point scored on an impressive kill by junior middle hitter Rachel Skoza.
The visiting Warriors managed only 1 more point as Uni finished an 18-4 comeback to win the first game.
The second game started out with the Illineks much more in control, building a 17-9 advantage. But Decatur Christian staged a comeback of its own, outscoring Uni 12-3 to take a 21-20 lead.
But once the Illineks tied the game at 21, they settled down. Sophomore defensive specialist Michelle Wong took over the serving and Uni scored the next 4 points to win the game and sweep the match. It was Uni's second victory over Decatur Christian this year. The Illineks beat the Warriors in Decatur 25-21, 25-14 on Sept. 7.
For the night, Skoza led the Illineks with 7 kills, followed by senior middle hitter Karen Woodley with 3, senior setter Ruthie Welch with 2, and senior rightside hitter Claire Johnson with 2. Skoza also had 2 blocks.
Welch continued to add to her Uni career record in assists by making 10 tonight. She now has 781, putting her more than 500 ahead of former record-holder Hannah Kinney (271). Junior setter Sheri Grill added 2. Welch also led the team in digs with 11. Weiser had 6 digs, and fellow senior Sarah Pfander contributed 5.
Weiser and Machesky each scored 2 points on aces.
The girls will travel to Normal Calvary Baptist on Friday as they try to even their season record against the Crusaders, who beat Uni in three games Sept. 11 at Kenney Gym.
Then on Saturday the girls will play five matches at the Crusader Invitational in Buckley, where they could set a new school record for wins.
In junior varsity action, the Uni JV continued to have an impressive season, defeating Decatur Christian in three games: 25-21, 20-25, 15-11. The JV is now 6-3 overall, 4-1 in the ECIC.
