Boys basketball: Illineks defeat Mahomet-Seymour JV in Turkey Tourney

URBANA — The Uni boys varsity basketball team defeated the Class AA Mahomet-Seymour JV 58-53 Tuesday at Kenney Gym in the second day of the Uni/Atwood-Hammond Central Illinois Turkey Tourney.

Uni is now 2-0 and will play Bement 6 p.m. Friday at Kenney as the tournament continues. The winner will represent Pool A in the tourney's championship game Saturday night at Atwood-Hammond.

In Tuesday's contest, the Bulldogs remained close early on, trailing the Illineks 11-10 by the end of the first quarter. However, Uni flew ahead by halftime 36-24.

The Bulldogs didn't give up. In the second half Mahomet-Seymour scored three 3-pointers in a row and closed some of the gap, drawing to within single digits by the end of the third quarter 47-40.

Junior Mike Renner, playing in his first game of the season, led all scorers with 18 points. Juniors Austin Rundus, Isaac Radnitzer, and Chumar Williams added 9, 8, and 7 points, respectively. Rundus and Williams each scored one 3-pointer.
