Following requests from students and parents for a self-protection program earlier in the year, Uni is offering a Rape Aggression Defense course on the weekends of April 22-23 and 29-30 at Uni Gym from noon to 3 p.m.

The four-day course, which will be taught by a certified U of I instructor, is open to all female Uni students, staff, parents, and siblings. It teaches methods of self-protection in public places, including how to walk, how to dress, how to talk, and physical self-defense.

“It's important for young people to learn how to avoid potentially dangerous situations,” said Athletic Director Sally Walker when asked why students should take the course.

She has taken a similar class herself and said the quality of instruction for the upcoming sessions promises to be exceptional.

The fee is $12, and those intending to participate must register with Walker by April 14. To do so, e-mail her at swalker6@uni.uiuc.edu.

I think these kinds of classes are very important, since it is essential that people know how to defend themselves. Maybe we could have a practical self-defense class open to everyone in the future...
