Uni High math students dominated the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics regional contest held Saturday at Parkland College.
With a total of 693 points, Uni won first place in Division 3AA, a category intended for schools with enrollments between 1,000 and 1,999 students.
Out of 21 regions in the entire state, only two 3AA schools ranked higher than Uni: Fenwick, with 768 points, and Libertyville, with 698.
Among the 3AA schools that competed in Uni's Region 15, here were the final standings:
Uni: 693
Urbana: 491
Centennial: 434
Champaign Central: 405
Springfield: 386
Mattoon: 22
Uni will compete in the state ICTM contest on April 22 at the University of Illinois.
“We will extend invitations in the next couple of weeks,” executive math teacher Craig Russell said in an e-mail on Saturday. “We will take a team of about seven students per grade level (freshman through senior; subbies aren't allowed at the state level), with selection based primarily on individual contest scores.”
According to Russell, students will be asked to attend weekly math team meetings at lunch
(freshmen and sophomores on Wednesdays, juniors and seniors on Mondays), and one Saturday
morning practice session on April 8, to prepare for the state contest.
