Extracurricular Opportunities

Uni offers a wide range of curricular and extracurricular academic opportunities. Fine arts offerings are among the most extensive available anywhere for a school our size. In 2008, Uni won its 11th WYSE Academic Challenge state championship in 12 years and the journalism team placed won the state title in 2009.

Outstanding "No Cut" Athletics

A "no cut" athletics program allows any student to participate in competitive athletics. More than 60% of our students play on interscholastic teams in the following Illinois High School Association-sanctioned sports: Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Track, Girls Volleyball, and Girls Swimming.

College Prep

Uni courses prepare students for college. Every year many Uni students elect to take Advanced Placement (AP) tests. For the class of 2009, the average SAT composite score is 2094 and the average ACT composite score is 31.5. Twenty of the 57 students in the class of 2009 were National Merit honors semifinalists.

Uni students have access to the University of Illinois library system, the 5th largest library in the U.S., with over 10,524,935 volumes.

Great Traditions

Since the 1970s, thousands of students have used brightly colored paint to leave their handprints on the walls of the student lounge as an official part of graduation. Other great traditions include Agora Days, a 4-day period involving more than 100 special-interest classes taught by students, parents, alumni and faculty instead of regular classes, and the Freshmen Retreat at Allerton Park.

University of Illinois

Uni High is located at the heart of the University of Illinois campus, providing students with easy access to the University's resources. Uni students have the option of taking concurrent enrollment courses at the University with a full tuition-waiver. Uni students enjoy the freedom of an open campus during lunch and free periods.

8 to 1 Student/Faculty Ratio

An 8 to 1 student/faculty ratio ensures each Uni student gets individual attention from Uni's talented and experienced faculty. Current teacher Chris Butler developed a flowchart-based approach to learning history. Max Beberman, a member of the math faculty from 1950-1971, contributed to the development of New Math.

Student Life

Uni has over 50 clubs, student organizations, and extra curricular activities. Students have a voice in school governance through elected service on Student Council and the Student-Faculty Advisor Committee. Students also participate in a substantial number of social responsibility projects ranging from tutoring to projects for Habitat for Humanity.

Uni has many famous alumni, including three Nobel Prize laureates: Philip W. Anderson (class of 1940), Hamilton O. Smith (class of 1948), James Tobin (class of 1935), best selling author Iris Chang (class of 1985), co-founder of Wolfram Research, Theodore Gray (class of 1982), and Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist George Will.
