Richard Wang, class of 2009, was selected as one of thirty regional finalists for the 2008-09 Siemens Competition in Math, Science, & Technology for his work in the field of biochemistry.

2008 Uni Graduate Alex Zhai earned a gold medal in the 2007 Math Olympiad leading the US team to a 5th place finish overall. He also picked up a silver medal in the previous year.

Thirty-four of 64 students in the Class of 2008 were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship program. Fourteen of 64 students were named National Merit Finalists.  Fifteen of 64 were named National Merit Semifinalists. Nineteen of 64 students were named Commended students.

Isaac Chambers, class of 2009, was selected as one of the two Illinois delegates for the 2008 U.S. Senate Youth Program. In addition to a $5,000 scholarship, he will go on an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. where he will observe the Senate at work.

In the Class of 2004, three students were selected as candidates in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program--with two of the students advancing to semifinalist standing.

For two consecutive years NewsWeek has ranked Uni High in the top 21 among public high schools, based on SAT/ACT scores as well as the “Challenge Index.”

Uni High teams have won the state championship (small-school division) in the annual Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering competition for five consecutive years (1998-2002).

Members of the Uni Classes of 2001, 2002 and 2004 each have won the American Association of Teachers of German Travel Award, a national competition.

Since 1999, several Uni High students have won the national Earth Sky radio broadcast competition. Their entries were broadcast on National Public Radio as part of the Earth Sky series.

In 2008, 4 students were recognized by IMEA as some of the top high school musicians in Illinois. A full list of IMEA recognitions can be found here.

Since 1992, Uni students have won four gold and three silver medals in the National Scholastic Writing Awards in the areas of drama, poetry, fiction, and essay writing.

Each year since 1996-97, our student newspaper, The Gargoyle, has been a finalist for a National Newspaper Pacemaker Award as one of the top scholastic papers in the country.  In 2003, the newspaper was named the nation's top high school newspaper by Time Magazine and the Association of Educational Publishers.

Each year several Uni students are invited to take the prestigious American Invitational Math Exam (AIME).

In the late 1990s, Uni teams twice won the international NSTA / Toshiba ExploraVision competition, the world's largest K-12 science contest. The 10 students on the winning teams $80,000 in scholarships. In 2004, three Uni freshmen each won $3,000 in the U.S. Army Web-based science, math and technology eCYBERMISSION contest and earned a trip to Washington, D.C.
